Storing Odd Shaped Items of Evidence

At the Burbank Police Department, our Property Section had a problem storing certain oddly shaped items, such as baseball bats, steering wheel locks, hockey sticks, bolt cutters, etceteras, ad infinitum. We would stack them up in a comer, or put them in a barrel, but trying to find a specific item was very difficult.
To correct this situation, we came up with the idea of hanging these long and narrow items from peg board. Not just any peg board would be sturdy enough, however. We designed a heavy duty system using removable 3/4" hardwood dowels inserted at a 15' angle into a 4' x 8' backboard. The hard card copy of our Evidence Tag, with Bar Code affixed, is attached to the item with a wire tie. Now we are able to neatly hang these items either directly from the pegs, or by using heavy duty rubber bands. And we can easily find any item we're looking for.
