Evidence Technician

Police Department

$2,323 – $2,672/month

DUTIES: Receives, inventories & maintains custody, of property and evidence submitted by Department Personnel such as Firearms, drugs, weapons, currency, clothing, papers and biological samples. Preserves, maintains chain of custody and stores all items for mailing or transport to other laboratories, delivery, to Court as evidence, release to owners, destruction or auction. Operate and maintain a computer database of evidence and property. Update and maintain the tracking systems to accurately reflect the chain of custody for each item. Insures the completeness of property records. Responds to requests and inquiries concerning the release of property, notify owners when property is available for release, insure compliance with Department policies & procedures, municipal ordinances and state statutes. Confer with Police Officers, Courts, Prosecutors and Probation Officers regarding the status of various cases. Communicate with Officers concerning their submissions. Testify in court as to the Department's evidence procedures & practices. Prepare and dispose of illegal items no longer needed for prosecution. Prepare and arrange for the destruction of biological items no longer needed as evidence. Prepare and transport items designated for auction. Assist in updating evidence procedures and preservation practices.

REQUIREMENTS: Two years of experience working with or in one of the following: evidence, inventory management, accounting, warehousing, shipping & receiving, bookkeeping & inventory, control. Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade, with college level course work desirable. Must be able to accurately type 20 WPM. Possession of, or ability to obtain, and maintain a valid Colorado drivers license. Knowledge desirable in methods, procedures, ordinances & state statutes concerning preservation, chain of custody, release, auction and destruction; forensic practices of evidence preservation; principles of business letter writing and basic report preparation; computer word programs and data bases; principles and procedures of record keeping. Ability to receive, document and preserve evidence and property; maintain the integrity of evidence; respond to requests from the public in a courteous manner; operate office equipment including computers; maintain and update records and files, produce a work product with a very high degree of accuracy; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and others contacted in the course of work. Hiring process includes a background check, practical test, oral board interview, drug screen and polygraph.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS: Ability to work with items weighing up to 40 pounds, use storage bins from floor level to overhead, use rolling ladder in placing and retrieving items from higher bins, operate a motor vehicle, work when kneeling, standing or walking, work while sitting, for prolonged periods of time doing computer entry &, updating records.
